This is a good reason for using mfsroot, anyway I'm not going to
change the way FreeSBIE works now that we're approaching the release.
This can be considered for the future, but I think Daichi Goto's
patch for unionfs will be committed to the tree and will simplify
everything.

Wasn't detected at all? Do you mean that the X.org can't be started at
all or only that it had a wrong resolution? What kind of monitor was
yours?
