Before mailing the list I saw those notes and tried the suggestion,

... if you're using the FreeIPMI tools (i.e. ipmi-sensors or
ipmi-sel), you normally don't need to load the IPMI kernel driver.
FreeIPMI's tools implement a driver in userspace that can work as long
as you are root.
