How experienced are you at working with VMware? Now it's free for
personal use I suspect more people are trying it.

It tries to automate a lot of OS setup and it sounds to me like this
has bitten you.

If you create a new VM and assign an ISO to it as a virtual CD, after
the first reboot, this is automatically removed. That would cause what
you describe: trying to boot from an empty, unformatted hard disk.

Check it's still trying to boot from the same boot media you had
before. You may need to re-connect it.
