I wrote my first DOS program in 1984 on my IBM PC. I loved that keyboard back
then but now it makes so much noise. Anyway, I am wanting to set up a dev
environment to develop for FreeDOS. I was hoping to get some direction from the
group on how to get started.
Should I use Borland C or Turbo C++ or what. What version? I want to write code
that will work on the oldest systems still in operation now. Can I code on my
Windows 10 machine or should I do it on the legacy box. Where can I find legacy
software for EMR (electronic medical records) like CHIRON (see below)
The Australian state of South Australia is being sued for refusing to stop
using CHIRON, an MS-DOS-based software from the '90s that stores patient
records. Their license expired in March of 2015, but they claim it would be
risky to stop using it. CHIRON's vendor, Working Systems, says SA Health has
been the only user of CHIRON since 2008 when they declined to migrate to the
successor product MasterCare ePAS.

SA Health sticking to Chiron despite licence dispute

Kate McDonald

The South Australian Department of Health plans to continue to use Global
Health's Chiron software in some of it...

There are so many legacy computers in the world running software that is not
supported so I need to set up the development environment and protocol
identifying for what type of machines and configurations we will develop for,
Processor, memory, BIOS, etc. Any help, comments etc would be greatly
appreciated.
