Well, Trixter is a big fan of 8086/8088 and similar vintage hardware.
It seems his last update (last month!) says there are now 200+ systems
in his benchmark database.

I meant here (below), but it's not actively maintained (2005!), so I'm
not sure how complete it is. But it's probably better than nothing.

I'm sure some pieces have been updated since then, but there's still a
lot of things rough around the edges. (Always more TODO.)

No, but he frequents the mailing lists (sometimes). And yes, we all
appreciate his work.

If something specific like "DIR" or "COPY" were too slow, that would
be nice to know. But FreeCOM (shell) is quite a beast, so it's fairly
complex (and has no current maintainer). If you want to try again
(presumably with 0.84-pre2 but maybe also 0.82pl3), go ahead. It would
be nice to know the exact commands that are bottlenecks for you. But
there may not be any huge fixes any time soon. So, for now, a
workaround would be to use third-party tools (under FreeDOS, not
MS-DOS, natch) that are faster (e.g. 1dir or Zcopy or whatever, I
can't remember everything).

There are several debuggers. I don't think most of them are actively
maintained (e.g. Insight, FD Debug), but you're welcome to try
anyways.

Maybe, if you have enough time and energy to spare. Just don't get
your hopes up too high. Some things still need a little TLC, but we're
kinda low on volunteers.

There are, of course, various file managers, but as far as Xtree (or
compatibles), esp. for 8086, I have no idea. Not sure about MFM
diagnostics. Actually, wasn't oldy-moldy-classic DOS Navigator 1.51
totally 16-bit? You could always try that (not directly Xtree
compatible, AFAIK, but still extremely good).
