Hi Jim,
I just thought I'd point out something about the Unicomp keyboards. On
their website, they have a 'Keyboard Configuration Tool' that allows you
to select alternative layouts. They have a version with 'Vertical
Enter' available that I assume refers to this layout:

It appears to have the backslash right below the 'A' button. I don't
know if you consider that a 'good positon' for programming and the
command line, but it's at least not above the 'ENTER' key. I'm not sure
what that extra key next to the 'ENTER' key is, though.
