a) if it's not yet done, done waste your time writing a new one.
optimistically, your new powerful editor will be used by
(optimistimally) a double digit number of people. and most of them
won't use a build in calendar.

b) it should be a .exe file; noone cares if it is compiled BASIC, Pascal,
Python or Ruby on Rails as long as it works.

if Windows (and Linux) can be written in C, an editor probably can, too.
