[QUOTE Mike: Here is a small example - I started working on mTCP in late 2005.
It was 2008 before I had an application suitable for an end-user to run. In
2011 the code was finally clean/stable enough to release. Right now the next
version is over 36000 lines of code and comments. It's taken thousands of hours
over the last six years to do this. That includes 228K of user documentation
and another 60K of developer documentation, which is woefully inadequate and
needs more time. Am I lazy for pointing out the level of effort and skill
required to implement some of your ideas? How much effort do you think it takes
to build a better DOS with the features that you are talking about? How about
the applications to go with it? Do any other current active developers want to
chip in with their experiences? Georg? Eric A.? Jack? I think it would be
helpful to hear how much time it takes to maintain and develop applications and
drivers for the existing DOS that we have. I've been spending my time and
energy where I think it is most productive and does the greatest good. It's
your time and energy to spend as you please, so go ahead and go big. But I
really don't think you have an idea of the size of the undertaking. Don't be
disappointed if everybody else doesn't jump right away - it is for you to lead
and build that momentum. But please be more aware of what you are asking
for.\QUOTE] My previous comment was a general statement that can be applied to
anyone, including myself at times. There was no intention of offending you
personally; as one cannot make that assumption about you. I apologize if i have
offended as that was not the aim behind my last post. It was only pointing out
that it is easier to provide reasons not to than it is to provide reasons for.
Your answer is valid, but reality is i do understand what is required and how
big what i am proposing is. As i have mentioned previously numerous times, the
idea would take years for me along to complete. The otherside of it is i
understand what you are getting at, that doing such a project may break
compatibility or the system entirely. This is a risk that i am prepared to
take, if it breaks the system so be it. It would be naive of me to expect
everyone to jump on the band wagon because the idea sounds good. I am surprised
by how much discussion this has generated. I have posted to other opensource
OS's with the idea and been seen as crazy or trolling. [QUOTE Eric: On the
other hand, not using a virtual machine is pointless because no existing DOS
game could use modern soundcards and no existing DOS networking software could
use WLAN or UMTS.\QUOTE] Not exactly what i meant lol. [QUOTE Eric:DOSEMU
already has the feature to let you access Linux directories as if they were DOS
drives and to run Linux commands with the tool "unix". Run "unix /?" in DOSEMU
to find out how it works :-)\QUOTE] Well, well, well you learn something new
everyday. :) That makes it just that little more intriguing. A DOSEMU Linux
Distro! Martin Kelly
