DOS386 (on Freedos-user):

I think that there are drivers/systems that will just expect both entries  
to reside in the first two directory entries. This means they would not be  
able to access real files stored in these entries, and their tools (such  
as the RD command of FreeCOM) would delete non-empty directories thinking  
they were empty if only the first two entries hold files.
