To be honest, I need an OS to test old computers, which I can install very quickly and which shows that they boot up and work, that the hard disk has no bad blocks, etc. I thought DOS would be quicker & easier than Linux for this, and is less intimidating: no login, nice familiar C prompt, etc. > many things got fixed: HIMEM/EMM, DEVLOAD, ... > > some partially: kernel (2038), EDIT (yeah), FDISK (patch pending), > DEFRAG/SCANDISK, ... > > some not: FreeCOM, DELTREE, ... > > some are fine anyway: ATTRIB, ... > > some will never (?) be added like UI21DEB, UZ un'ZIP'pper (needs 80386), ... For my purposes, I just need something simple and stable to format the hard disk & show it boots. I don't care all that much about actually running programs, but I thought that maybe I could help to demonstrate what DOS can do. At the moment, the system as installed from the "full" CD image doesn't do this very well, even though it contains lots & lots of programs. -- Liam Proven • Profile: http://www.linkedin.com/in/liamproven Email: [email protected] • GMail/GoogleTalk/Orkut: [email protected] Tel: +44 20-8685-0498 • Cell: +44 7939-087884 • Fax: + 44 870-9151419 AOL/AIM/iChat/Yahoo/Skype: liamproven • LiveJournal/Twitter: lproven MSN: [email protected] • ICQ: 73187508 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Download Intel® Parallel Studio Eval Try the new software tools for yourself.
