Just to let you know, due to lack of bugfixes in the graphical installer, it cannot be included with 1.0, otherwise people would blame us for releasing buggy software. The text installer works pretty much everywhere and is much more stable.
Unless anyone releases a showstopper-fixed graphical installer :-). Aitor: Keyb 2.0 pre4 will be included if you cannot manage to get 2.0 released in time (no pressure). And as for SYS, since on some drives (but this is rare to reproduce, but nonetheless reported by more than one person) fails to recognize FAT32 LBA partitions, marking them as FAT16 non-LBA instead and creating a wrong bootsector, so for all FAT32 drives, GRUB4DOS will be used instead of SYS as it can correctly directly boot FreeDOS kernels on FAT32 disks... again, unless this problem is fixed. (and I have enough things to do :-)) As for FDISK, I am using the Jeremy-possibly-bugfixed version and including XFDISK (GPL) as a second option for the user. In FreeCOM world, 0.84pre2 will be used for the testing release; it fully supports long filenames and I don't see any new bugs since 0.84pre1. If people end up having many problems, I will fall back to 0.84pre1 for 1.0. FDPKG 1.0-pre will be installed by default for package management, and a modified text installer will do its best to integrate package management into the installed FreeDOS (including removal of unwanted packages, dependency checking, etc..) Included with it is a utility that uses specified files to rename short filenames to long filenames needed by some packages. That way, the long filenames can survive being zipped and unzipped with an Info-Zip that doesn't support long filenames. As for the packages themselves, the extra diskset got too big, so I split it into many disksets, like driver, compress, and games (and yes, there is FreeDOOM+DOOM Legacy included :-) ). What good OS doesn't have games? p7zip 4.42 stable compiled with DJGPP is also included, and possibly in the future, the CD-Images of FreeDOS will have all packages packed with 7zip to save space. With regards to the floppy disksets, they will not be released at first. When I REALLY have the time, I will get them out for their slightly smaller audience. Michael Devore: I'm eagerly awaiting that upcoming EMM386 so that it can be included :-). I was hoping to include OpenGEM/XM, as it has very good task-switching/clipboard capabilities, but since SUBST is buggy in FreeDOS, it seems that that isn't going to happen this time 'round. OpenGEM will be included however. Ghostscript, ImageMagick, and various other Unix-DJGPP ports of software will be included, and BSFIRC will be included for an IRC client. Before I release the testing version, I will try to test thouroughly in QEMU, but that is the best I can do. I am relying on feedback. One thing is for sure though, that if 1.0 is a failure, FreeDOS could suffer greatly, so testers are REALLY appreciated. If we do end up having to postpone the release for one more month due to some showstopping bugs, we will have to let everyone know that because many are awaiting 1.0 eagerly.
