If you look at version numbering, you will see that this is the *ONLY* existing manet of identifying a kernel. Version is usualy not updated.

I think the latter could be a pretty nice feature for FreeCOM VER /R :-)

Yes. And I believe in more than that it VER /R should be included in VER, this si why: VAR as used in MS-DOS is ok because there is never a discrepancy between kernel and command. In FreeDOS these are independent so a VERsion deppends on both of them...
