Some versions use DOS32A. Try setting your CONFIG.SYS HIMEM line with the option /MAX=256M to limit available memory to 256M and see if the behavior changes. DOS32A can have problems with too much free memory, as silly as that sounds. Let me know if it changes anything or not.
