Hi Johnson, talking about testing-in-emulation...

There are LTOOLS. Works like MTOOLS: Special programs, which are
like copy, dir, ..., but which can use Linux "drive letters".
For Samba, I guess there is only MSCLIENT for now.

Yes, especially for FORMAT, it always helps if people offer to test
on their PCs. For example I only have a boring 1.44 MB drive and Linux,
so for other floppy types and Win compatibility, I cannot test myself.

I think DEFRAG / CHKDSK stability is okay, but it is simply too picky.
DOSFSCK just wants a *consistent* format, while DEFRAG / CHKDSK want
a format on the *list* of known good floppy geometries.

It is probably even okay to reverse engineer as long as it is needed
to get interoperability (fix compatibility bugs). But I just wanted to
mention the remote possibility that people could complain about making
a mem (and ROM) dump completely public, because it could be used for
other things than needed compatibility fixing. This is why I suggested
to reveal the URL only to those who want to look at the connection
between EMM386 and ROM troubles. Not that I think that any BIOS vendor
would REALLY care about such things at all.
