Hi Tom! > seriously - would you use AnyDOS for your everyday work ?
Well we both use DOS for some WORK. In my case it is real-time data processing. DOS is not optimized for that but as it is single-tasking, as long as you do not wait for the kernel, you have 100% CPU. So you can place kernel calls into time-uncritical moments... In your case it is disk backup/restore stuff, probably used only for emergency restore (as your backup software has the clever feature of working in the backup, after freezing some disk state information in some way, so it works in Windows...). And I use DOS for FUN. Old DOS games, that is :-). > Actually I make a living by SELLING software. This involves helping people to help themselves. Microsoft has given a bad example: They reduce helpdesk costs by offering the stupid 'insert the emergency recovery disk, wait 2 hours, and the whole disk will be as in the store again. With all your files, updates and security fixes gone, but at least working' ... Good documentation for both stupid and technical (but not technical enough to use the source code) helps users to be happy with the product. Another example is StarDivision: At some point they decided to make a living from high quality SUPPORT and courses, but to make the product itself free. Now StarOffice is a SOLD product again, but both OpenOffice (free) and people who make money with support and courses for OpenOffice still exist :-). Eric PS: That data processing stuff does not pay my rent or anything. It is only a small job at university. But still, it is a paid DOS job. ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: YOU BE THE JUDGE.
