The usual mode of operation for a native unit is to wander around looking
for something to attack, and otherwise move in a random direction for a
few turns.  They also get called home to their own settlement when it
is threatened or under defended.  This has the advantage of being simple.
It would probably be fairly straightforward to add some bias in the
direction of the settlement in proportion to how far they were away.

Perhaps.  However it is clear that the Col1 designers wanted the natives
to be unpredictable, so there is a balance to be struck there.
