Probably depends on the machine running it. On my fairly outdated single
core processor notebook, the difference between OpenJDK and Sun Java was
Freecol unplayable vs. Freecol playable. The difference was enourmous: When
scrolling the map, I had a framerate of about 0,5-1fps under OpenJDK, and a
normal scroll behaviour under Sun Java.

Nice side effect of the switch: Firefox stopped crashing every other
session because I replaced the IcedTea plugin, too.

This was the situation about 2 years ago. Maybe I should give it another
try and see if the situation improved. Still the same notebook, but with a
ubuntu dist-upgrade.

The way I understand it, you are in no way "avoiding" Oracle by using
OpenJDK. Me too, I thought until yesterday that OpenJDK was some different
implementation of the Java language but that perception does not seem to be
correct.

Rather, OpenJDK is supposed to be just that Oracle Source Code for Java
maintained by Oracle minus some 3rd party libs that have been rewritten to
comply with the open source license.

On the seemingly official openJDK website http://openjdk.java.net/ you can
find following statements in the FAQ:

> What are Oracle's plans for the OpenJDK Community?
>
> Oracle plans to continue to work on the next release of the Java SE
> platform with the Java community as part of the OpenJDK project. OpenJDK is
> the only open-source Java SE implementation to which Oracle plans to

Thus, openjdk packages are as much Oracle as the sun-java packages.
