A few preliminary findings: Colonization maps have a size of 58 x 72 tiles, and the map files have a size of 12534 bytes. The files start with a six-byte header. Byte 0 is the map width, byte 2 is the map height. The maps seem to contain three map layers. The first layer records the tile types. The original map editor does not allow you to edit rows 0 or 71, nor columns 0 or 57. All tiles in these lines and columns are replaced with the default tile type (ocean, decimal 25). Ice seems to be encoded as decimal 24.
