I general i can not imagine that one could lost in FreeBSD handbook. IMHO it is written very good and there you can find some basic things too. There is whole chapter called Unix basics http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/basics.html The name clearly suggests that it is quite basic!
