I went back and tried the whole partitioning process again following the instructions EXACTLY as laid out in section 16.3.1 of the FreeBSD handbook and it worked this time.

You say you were able to create it as da0s1d; how do you *know* you were able to do that. It doesn't look as though you did. Are there *any* /dev/da* devices?
What if you rescan the USB bus?
