Do we have a way to change PORTNAME without breaking pkg-upgrade?
Pkgssrc has the SUPERSEDES variable:
https://www.netbsd.org/docs/pkgsrc/submit.html#renaming-package
I'm not seeing anything equivalent in the FreeBSD ports docs, though.
So, if a PORTNAME doesn't follow all the rules (e.g. regarding
upper/lower case), I'm thinking it's better to leave it alone rather
than bring it up to code and cause pkg-upgrade to fail for everyone
who has the port installed.
That shall be helpful:
https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/porters-handbook/book/#moved-and-updating-moved
Thanks, I was aware of those, but I don't believe they have any effect
on pkg-upgrade.
MOVED just documents changes to the port's pathname under $PORTSDIR.
UPDATING just documents extra steps to manually take when updating a port.
What I'm looking for, and what SUPERSEDES provides in pkgsrc, is a way
to make pkg-upgrade(8) aware of a change to the PORTNAME variable. If
PORTNAME is changes from xzy to Xyz, pkg-upgrade will fail to upgrade
xzy unless the user explicitly uses --case-insensitive. If PORTNAME is
changed from xyz to xyz2, there appears to be no way at all to make
pkg-upgrade recognize that they are the same port and an upgrade should
occur.
