Sorry but it is not clear, does /usr/local/etc/*rc.d*/cyrus_imapd exist in the upgraded jail?

Yes, it does (otherwise, starting it manuall with "service imapd start" would not work).

It has always been my understanding that local daemons install into /usr/local/etc/*rc.d*

Not sure what you are asking...
Deamons typically install in /usr/local/[s]bin, but sometimes somewhere else.
*RC scripts* install into /usr/local/etc/rc.d
Config files may be created in /usr/local/etc/rc.conf.d/.

Is it possible cyrus_imapd was replaced by imapd?

Again, not sure what you are referring to.

PS: the possible "fix" is from your report is to use *imapd_enable="YES"*  ;)
No: altough the script is named "imapd", it searches for the variable "cyrus_imapd_enable".
So, unless I change the port's RC script...

 bye & Thanks
