Gtk2 is deprecated and does not support high DPI displays, so it's
already a reason to not use it anymore.

When did that happen? I run Mate desktop which is gtk2 based as are a
great many ports.
Deprecated does not mean it does not work :) It just means it don't get
bugfixes and that it should not be used in new code.
