What do you mean by "old X server"? xserver 1.7.7 and xf86-video-ati 6.14.6? If that's true, then the failure is expected because xf86-video-ati 6.14.6 will have loaded the old non-KMS kernel Radeon driver (radeondrm.ko). xf86-video-ati 7.5.0 can't work this old module and failed to load the new one because they conflict. That would explain why a reboot fixed the problem: radeondrm.ko wasn't loaded anymore. -- Jean-Sébastien Pédron
