From the top man page [1]:

SIZE is the total size of the process (text, data, and stack), RES is the current amount of resident memory
(both SIZE and RES are given in kilobytes)

You should see your total RAM size in top as well. To me it sounds like you're swapping a whole lot which make it seem like your system is hanging in an extreme situation.
