I think that Kurt answered the question "Do you - you personally - keep every version of the shlibs you ever built, as opposed to somehow - not necessarily automagically on port installation/upgrade or periodically - clean up the unused ones" :) You are correct that the original question was probably meant to differentiate between the two options you listed.
