IMHO the best way to implement it is to run scripts through devd. e.g.
create
use subsystem "GPIO" and few event types: "BUTTON_DOWN", "BUTTON_UP",
/add yours here/. From the kernel side it's just a matter of calling
devctl_notify if I got it right.
