That didn't make any difference - nor, (just in case) did setting it to
'0'.
Are you sure it's compiled into the kernel? It's in GENERIC, but I'm
not sure what you're running...

Sorry, yes - it's running GENERIC (i.e. stock 9.0-R GENERIC).
