If you are down to 1M, I think you may need to check signal strength and such. I'd start with my testing near the AP (in sight of it at least).
Ok - I don't usually talk to myself (not in public anyway) - but here are my findings. When in 11b mode, everything works fine (I didn't try going to the edge of my coverage area though - too comfortable on my couch). When in 11g mode, I see the rate flap up and down between 48M and 24M, and each time it switches, it loses some packets in between modes. I just now manually set my client (FreeBSD of course) to 36M, and it seems to be holding up for now. Here's all I did:
ifconfig ath0 media OFDM/36Mbps mode 11g
Give that a try on the FreeBSD AP, and see if that helps at all (you may want to try the 11b modes, like:
ifconfig ath0 media DS/2Mbps mode 11b
or something..
