Things are getting better, but still not quite perfect. My latest kernel
(Tue Sep 23 23:17:37 CDT) still fails to attach the ata1-master device on
boot. But interestingly, we later have this:

$ atacontrol list
ATA channel 0:
    Master:  ad0 <Maxtor 94091U8/FA520S60> ATA/ATAPI rev 5
    Slave:   ad1 <WDC WD800BB-32BSA0/12.08C12> ATA/ATAPI rev 5
ATA channel 1:
    Master:      <ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ/ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ>
ATA/ATAPI rev 0
    Slave:  acd0 <R/RW 4x4x24/C12a> ATA/ATAPI rev 0
root:/usr/src$ atacontrol mode 1
Master = WDMA2
Slave  = WDMA2
root:/usr/src$ atacontrol reinit 1
Master:      <COMPAQ DVD-ROM SD-608/BC04> ATA/ATAPI rev 0
Slave:  acd0 <R/RW 4x4x24/C12a> ATA/ATAPI rev 0
root:/usr/src$ atacontrol detach 1
root:/usr/src$ atacontrol attach 1
Master: acd0 <COMPAQ DVD-ROM SD-608/BC04> ATA/ATAPI rev 0
Slave:  acd1 <R/RW 4x4x24/C12a> ATA/ATAPI rev 0

Does this offer any further clues?
