I did try `mergemaster -p` and somehow (!) ended up with an empty `/etc/group`
file. Dug myself out of that hole, I'll prefer to continue using etcupdate.
For years now I have always initiated a simple failsafe
# cp -Rp /etc /eetc
prior to (build|install) (world|kernel)
because you just never know. ;-)
