I've further verified that:

- it's J that's causing the problem, even without A present.
- the assembler generates identical .o files with or without the J
option of malloc, so it's really an ld problem.

I think you're right, and it expects a zeroed-out malloced memory
somewhere. I'll try to hunt for it in spare time.
