I had this problem with a Compaq Armada E700.
The problem was due to the default memory address of 0xd0000,
pccardd found the PCMIA card after changing the
pccard_mem="DEFAULT" to pccard_mem="0xd4000" in rc.conf
For some reason the system did not like the default of 0xd0000
