Just in case it matters: the kernel/userland/cc that was giving me grief had been built with a make.conf that said NO_KERBEROS=yes, something I'd added to try to work around the MD2_foo crypto linking problems. I can't imagine why that would be a problem, but I'm not risking it any more...
