Re-nicing wont help as I have just confirmed that the problem occurs if I run MAME, exit MAME and then get on the net.
Very wierd... after running MAME, the serial port is unusable for ppp unless I reboot. Just doing a DNS lookup causes several silo overflows. MAME does something very strange to the system. I will grep the MAME source code for anything related to serial ports.
