It appears that this was a cvs problem: my update log showed:
...
cvs update: Updating contrib/egcs/gcc
cvs update: move away contrib/egcs/gcc/invoke.texi; it is in the way
C contrib/egcs/gcc/invoke.texi

I removed the file and did a 'cvs update -PdA' again and this solved
the problem.
