If you did that you would find the the latest GNU release is 2.9.1.
Guess what -- Binutils is getting little maintaince. They are not
working towards a release (2.9.1 was 1.5 yrs ago). I have communicated
with those on the binutils devel list at sourceware.cygnus.com, and no
one was willing to claim what is in the HEAD trunk of their anoncvs
server was release quality. ..... So what to do .....

Doing *something* is on my list of post 4.0 issues. Now sure what I will
do about it... But nothing will happen for 4.0.
