Hello:
I tried to install 4.0-RC on my computer last night and ran into some
trouble. I just wanted to convey the problems so that they can be fixed
before release. I just subscribed to this list, and the archives are
down, so I apologize if this has already been covered.
Here goes...
My system is a Pentium MMX 233MHz on an Asus Intel Triton2-based
motherboard (forget the model #), 64MB of EDO RAM, Tekram 390 (Symbios
875) UWSCSI board, IBM UWSCSI 9GB disk, Mitsumi 8x IDE CDROM, Iomega IDE
ZIP, Creative SB 64AWE, WD8013 NIC.
Here are the problems I had during the installation (Novice install).
1) This may be intended, but no PCI devices show up in the visual
kernel configuration screen.
2) The whole installation went fine until it asked if I wanted Linux
compatibility. I answered Yes, but it said that it couldn't find the
package 'linux_base'.
3) When it asked if I wanted to configure the X server, and I said Yes,
it immediately displayed a dialog box telling me something to the effect
that X configuration has failed and asked if I wanted to try again. No
amount of trying again works.
4) An error message on the second (ALT-F2) virtual terminal said
something like this: "Shared object libXThrStub.so.6 not found". I'm
not sure when in the installation this appeared.
5) When I was asked to pick a Window Manager, it failed because of
dependencies on xfree86-3.3.6 (sp?). The X servers were installed, but
I guess this fact wasn't registered.
6) During package installation, some strange categories appeared in the
list, for example '.3' was the first category in the list. It had "No
Description available" or something to that effect next to it.
I didn't bother keeping 4.0 on the machine because I didn't want to
fiddle with getting things straightened out manually, mainly because I
wouldn't know how. Just wanted to let you folks know. Please let me
know if I need to report this some other way.
