CVSup has a tendency to expose network problems, because it uses TCP
in somewhat atypical ways.  Still, multiplexed mode is more "normal"
than the others.  I'm surprised you're having problems using it,
even with NAT.

If you have some time to spend on this, some tcpdumps might provide
a clue.
