THE FILMS AND VIDEOS OF RICHARD SERRA - PROGRAM FOUR
Railroad Turnbridge Directed by Richard Serra . US, 1976, 16mm, black & white,
silent, 19 min. It is the bridge that causes both the landscape and the film
itself to speak; the film follows the sequence of its procedures: turning,
opening for the passing ship, turning again, closing for the passing train. The
mechanics of the bridge become the grammar of the film. Tom Holert, Richard
Serra: Films and Videotapes, Kunstmuseum Basel (2017) Steelmill/Stahlwerk
Directed by Richard Serra in collaboration with Clara Weyergraf. Germany, 1979,
16mm, black & white, silent, 29 min. Serras film about the production of his
sculpture Berlin Block (for Charlie Chaplin) (1977) at the Henrichshtte
Hattingen steelworks in the Ruhr Valley, begun roughly one year before the
first major wave of strikes in the German steel industry since the war,
combines conventions from documentary film, agitprop, black-and-white
photographic studies and architectural film. Tom Holert, Richard Serra:
Films and Videotapes, Kunstmuseum Basel (2017)

JOURNEYS BEYOND THE COSMODROME
Jeanne C. Finley's Journeys Beyond the Cosmodrome (2019, 53 min.) is a riveting
portrait of a remote Eurasian culture as revealed through fantasies and fears
of its adolescents. On the vast Kazakhstan Steppes, nine 16-year-olds prepare
to graduate from the Akkol orphanage. Rockets launched from the nearby
Cosmodrome inspire their dreams as they write about and perform imagined
future-selves. Guided by the nomadic spirit and natural beauty of the Steppes,
each explores questions of time and truth in relation to the challenging
reality of their lives. Finley, a highly accomplished narrative and documentary
video artist, seamlessly interweaves traditional Kazakh culture, global popular
iconography, space travel, and individual performances to create a compelling
vision of their journeys into an uncertain adulthood. The evening will conclude
with live song from the Journeys' soundtrack, composed by Kri Schlafer,
director of the Portland Threshold Choir. The Threshold Choir is comprised of
over 200 choirs internationally that sing for those at the Thresholds of life.
Members of the Orange County and Westside Choirs will sing at the conclusion of
the screening.

MUSICAL SEQUENCE: MUSIC FOR THE EYES, FILM FOR THE EARS
The films in this session materially present music among their images, without

recordings, recitals and audiences. Following the notes of Robert Bresson, here
the music does not accompany, sustain or reinforce the images, instead,
performed on screen, structuring and overturning them. Sequenza, Manon de Boer,
