Hello fellow film freaks and geeks, we’ve missed you. This is the Chicago Underground Film Festival (aka CUFF), calling out to all our experimental filmmakers: *we want you to submit your film to CUFF 2020.* CUFF is the longest-running underground film festival in the world. If you didn’t know that, you’re welcome. And the fact that we turned twenty-seven this year, and our festival is an internationally recognized program that holds space for documentary, experimental and avant-garde narrative film and video, makes us that cool cousin of the film festival scene; you know, the one who listens to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and only wears black. Put simply, our festival directs the spotlight back onto avant-garde and cult cinema, and this year we’re looking for films that reinvent or explore new approaches to established practices. Through this focus, we harness the power and passion of those filmmakers whose work slips between the cracks or don’t fit into long-upheld societal norms. Hailed by The Chicago Sun-Times as "the city's most eclectic and best-curated fest," and known to Ray Pride (Newcity film critic,) as the festival that “expands the creative boundaries of contemporary narrative and experimental storytelling,” if you suspect your film is “underground,” then it probably is. And you should probably submit it. Don’t sleep on submitting, next deadline is December 6, 2019. *More about the festival* Hosted at Chicago’s legendary Logan Theatre from June 10 - 14, 2020 CUFF showcases the defiantly independent filmmaker by promoting film and video that challenges and transcends all expectations. Selected featured filmmakers will receive travel stipends to attend the festival, as well as all-access passes to screenings, parties, and other underground events that, let's be honest, only that cool cousin of yours would invite you to. In the past, CUFF parties have featured performances from artists as diverse as the festival’s film programming itself, including Chicago punk rock pioneers Silver Abuse, Pedestrian Deposit, ONO, Brett Nauke, Jeremiah Meece, The Ponys, Tommie Sunshine, The Handsome Family and a night of experimental comedy from critically acclaimed revue Helltrap Nightmare. *2019 Royalty* CUFF traditionally enlists its jurors to create the names for the awards given to add a unique and individual aspect to each edition of the film festival. Last year, the jury designated each award to represent experimental and underground film legends in order to draw the connection between their work and the influential work that had preceded them. CUFF 2019 Juror, Kera MacKenzie said, “by highlighting important underground filmmakers who have passed away and are still influencing the work being made today, we are connecting generations to a tradition that CUFF has stood for the past 26 years.”Winners were led by James N. Kienitz Wilkins and Peter Parlow’s THE PLAGIARISTS, which took home The William Greaves Award, and Adam Sekuler’s 36 HOURS which was honored with The Carolee Schneemann Award. The CUFF Audience Award winner was Stuart Swezey’s DESOLATION CENTER. After more than two decades in operation, our festival continues to be the premiere annual event for challenging, creative and artistic cinema.
