We are thrilled to be partnering with ECUAD and Cineworks to present the
Vancouver Premiere of Stephen Broomer’s TONDAL’S VISION (a free screening) as
well as a lecture/demo on the director’s techniques. (more info & registration

Last year we presented Broomer’s breathtaking experimental feature POTAMKIN.
TONDAL’S VISION continues Broomer’s astounding body of work taking found
materials, radically reworking them on 16mm film and then further digitally to
create truly visionary works. Recently screened at the Rotterdam International
Film Festival, MURA (Peru), Moscow International Experimental Film Festival,
and Alchemy Film & Arts (UK), TONDAL’S VISION is, in the director’s words:
A fable and immram, sifted from the cloak and rubble of the Comedy, a vision
before Dante. The soul of the knight Tondal, stricken by the excesses of his
flesh, quits his body to tour the next world. He is guided by an angel through
heaven, hell and limbo. What lessons await him here? To every pleasure there is
a cost, for poetry is a kind of poison, and even your angels will get you lost.
Angel, tell me, for how long was I dead?
Be it true or be it false, it is as the copy was.
The wavering, brightly coloured bodies of archival celluloid, mutilated to the
margins of figurative representation, gripped me for the full runtime.

The bold strokes and colours of the visuals are utterly glorious to revel in
and give the entire film a painterly quality that speaks to Broomer’s
multidisciplinary interests and ties this contemporary vision to an imagined
supernatural past and an actual art historical one.

“I rephotographed Giuseppe de Liguoro’s 1911 adaptation of Dante’s Inferno…once
processed, I had roughly 2000 feet of 16mm film for experimentation, applying
mordancage chemistry to the film. The goal of this process was to create a
largely abstract adaptation of Tondal’s Vision, in colour, applied through
tint, tone, paint and digital tools, that draws from the colour palette of
Simon Marmion’s illuminations for the fifteenth-century manuscript, Les Visions
du chevalier Tondal.” -Stephen Broomer
