It's true that the color films are never going to give you the degree of snap that you get from a B&W film because they just don't have a huge amount of silver in them. A more reactive developer than Rodinol might be worth trying.
I'd just do a foot or so of film in a roll film tank for test purposes, since you can work with the lights up and read a book while you are waiting for extended development time.
