HONORING PETER MAYS, LOS ANGELES TREASURE, PART 1 
Our friend Peter Mays has made films and paintings in Los Angeles since the 
1960s. He was a crucial figure in the experimental film scene here. He passed 
away early in the morning on March 4, 2019. We want to honor him by screening a 
variety of his works made over the past 59 years. In this first part, we look 
more at his works originating on film in the 1960s, although some weren’t 
completed for decades. Their effusiveness, pop culture references, and 
psychedelic colorful extremes make them some of the finest documents of the

CITY SYMPHONY 
by Dominic Angerame. A collection of five distinct films centering around the 
city environment in a constant state of change, focusing on images of 
construction and destruction of modern structures in the urban environment. 
CONTINUUM CONTINUUM (1987) centers on the people who perform hard manual labor, 
such as tarring roofs, digging up streets, etc. DECONSTRUCTION SIGHT (1995) 
shows how modern methods of construction have rendered men and women 
insignificant behind mammoth tools of destruction. IN THE COURSE OF HUMAN 
EVENTS (1997) documents the demolition of the Embarcadero Freeway, which was 
structurally damaged during the 1989 earthquake. THE LINE OF FIRE (1997) finds 
Angerame returning to his apartment building the day after it burned down. And 
PREMONITION (1995) shows the vacant Embarcadero Freeway after it has outlived 
its usefulness, but before its destruction.Plus, the NYC Premiere of the most 
recent chapter of Angerame's CITY SYMPHONY series!:REVELATIONS (2018, 24 min, 
digital) "This works includes footage that was filmed from the late 1990s to 
the present. Some of the footage includes shots from waterfront docks near the 
Todd Shipyards of San Francisco and scenes of the baseball stadium while it was 
being constructed. REVELATIONS also shows the cityscape from the Dogpatch area 
before renovations and many scenes from the San Francisco Embarcadero. There 
were many scenes in the 16mm that were over exposed and I was tempted to throw 
the material away. But in the post-production, my black-and-white grader, 
Yannis Davidas from Light Cone in Paris, was able to adjust the gain and out of 
the whiteness of the overexposed film materialized imagery that I had never 
seen before. Since new imagery was revealed to me, I decided to call the film

WATER &AMP; DAMS FILM PROGRAM 
Dams and water systems may seem like unlikely subjects for acclaimed directors, 
but strangely enough everyone from Ermanno Olmi and Jean-Luc Godard to prolific 
American independent filmmaker Kevin Jerome Everson have made fascinating films 
about those very things. Both Olmi and Godard began their careers with lyrical 
short works documenting the construction of dams, while Everson's SOUND THAT 
depicts the employees of the Cleveland Water Department on the hunt for leaks 
in Cuyahoga County's water system. The program also includes two Canadian 
non-fiction films, Gordon Sparling's PICKING LOCKS and Roger Blais's THE DIKES.

PSYCHOHYDROGRAPHY 
by Peter Bo Rappmund. This mesmerizing work follows the Los Angeles water 
supply from its Eastern Sierra Nevada source through the alien channels of the 
Los Angeles River all the way to its eventual Pacific deposit. Constructed 
entirely from single-frame photographic images, combined with sound recordings 
of the sun by Thomas Ashcraft, PSYCHOHYDROGRAPHY is a strikingly conceived and 
fully accomplished work. It is reminiscent of the work of James Benning and 
Thom Andersen in its formal qualities as well as its concern with the social 
and political dimensions of landscape. With: Emily Richardson PETROLIA (2005, 
21 min, digital) PETROLIA looks at the architecture of the oil industry along 
the Scottish coastline where oil and gas supplies are predicted to run dry in 
the next forty years. Shooting on 16mm, and using time lapse and long exposure 
techniques, the film presents a record of industrial phenomena: the toxic 
beauty of the refinery at Grangemouth, huge drilling platforms gliding across 
the water as they come in for maintenance and repair at Nigg, and the last 
dance of the shipbuilding cranes in Glasgow harbor.

WORKSHOP &MDASH; REALITY IN THE MAKING: DOCUMENTARY AND PERFORMANCE 
** This workshop is limited to 15 participants ** At root, the nature of 
documentary exploration relies on a keen sense of observation. Inspired by the 
great documentary performances in films by Shirley Clarke, Abbas Kiarostami, 
Marlon Riggs, Jean Rouch, Orson Welles and many others, this workshop will 
integrate this heightened awareness into a hybrid form of response and 
interpretation using performance as our foundation. If a person is conscious of 
being in front of a camera, then every movement, gesture or word spoken is a 
form of willing collaboration in performing the self. Our intention, as a 
group, will be to break the boundaries between fiction and non-fiction. This 
three-day intensive is designed for a small group of professionals and will 
expose participants to a broad range of analysis and creative approaches to 
contemporary practice of documentary performance. Participants will also have 
the opportunity to experience the first act of Say Something Bunny!. There will 
be a corresponding public event with live performances on Thursday, March 21. 
Workshop attendees will receive free entry. Led by Lynne Sachs with guest 
instructors Alison S.M. Kobayashi, Walis Johnson and Lizzie Olesker. Please 
only register if you are able to attend all 3-sessions and participate in a 
short personal exercise before the course. Participants will write one 
paragraph and shoot a three minute video with a camera or cell phone prior to 
the beginning of the workshop. No video editing is required. Lynne will send 
out specific information about how to prepare this material.

SHORT ANIMATION BY DENNIS TUPICOFF 
Dennis Tupicoff is one of the most accomplished Australian independent 
animators working today. His unique style of hand-drawn animation mixed with 
live-action elements creates a feeling of grace in tackling such subjects as 
humanity and mortality. While he is known mostly for his works in animated 
documentary, Tupicoff also creates dramas, comedies, documentary hybrids, and 
film essays; regardless of his cinematic and editorial approach, his films are 
always introspective, experiential, and honest. We are pleased to present a 
selection of works by Tupicoff ranging from early works including Dance of 
Death and His Mother’s Voice to the recent a photo of me and Still Alive.

TRANS FILM: THE FILMS OF SUZIE SILVER, PROGRAM 1: ALTERNATE IMAGINARIES 
SUZIE SILVER IN PERSON! Over a career spanning the last thirty years, artist 
and filmmaker Suzie Silver has been persistently re-imagining human desires 
through the lenses of science fiction, drag, camp, and myth. We are thrilled to 
present two programs of her highly collaborative work, including early projects 
that helped define the canon of queer and trans video and performance, and new 
works that continue to expand upon it today. OBLIGATE SYMBIONTS OF COLUBUS 
GRAND takes us into an imagined cosmology 45.3 light years away where beings 
enact ritualized dance, while STINKHORN is the latest edition of Silver's work 
exploring fairy tales and mythic stories. ERIC MOE'S IDYLL reveals the mating 
rituals of forest nymphs, while THE HAPPIEST DAY creates a realm of innocence 
and pleasure in which historic performances are reenacted. A SPY: HESTER REEVE 
DOES THE DOORS is perhaps Silver's best-known work, wherein drag king Reeve 
performs to The Doors' "The Spy," clad as Jesus Christ with small, painted 
portraits on each breast. NEBULA creates an immersive kaleidoscopic sensory 
viewing experience, and FREEBIRD features Silver performing in drag the 
infamous Southern rock anthem that inspired an entire generation of 1970s male

SUZIE SILVER IN PERSON! In 2014, Suzie Silver began producing an episodic work 
called TRANS-Q TELEVISION. It is a playful and provocative video variety show 
reveling in the fluidity of gender and sexuality. Created with Scott Andrew, 
and in collaboration with a wide range of talent, the programs include stand-up 
theory, micro-documentaries, interviews, video art, animation, literary 
presentations, performance art, music, and much more. A Dadaist Variety Show 
for the 21st Century, it is a truly twisted mix of Sonny and Cher, SESAME 
STREET, ANDY WARHOL'S TV, Ernie Kovacs, Flip Wilson, Carol Burnett, WIGSTOCK, 
and PEE WEE'S PLAYHOUSE. We are pleased to present both completed episodes, as

most marvelous shadow-puppet show, Life or Theater?, a Lydia Greer/Caryl Kientz 
collaboration that plays out the tragic lives of two Berlin women who changed 
Art History. Lotte Reiniger fashioned a sublime silhouette-animation style in 
the ‘30s, whilst Charlotte Salomon opened up a new expressive space between

INTERIOR GARDENS: THE FILMS OF SARA KATHRYN ARLEDGE 
In conjunction with the exhibition entitled Sara Kathryn Arledge: Serene for 
the Moment, at the Armory Center for the Arts. Sara Kathryn Arledge is one of 
the undeservedly neglected figures in the American experimental cinema. 
Although her two major works, INTROSPECTION and WHAT IS A MAN?, were completed 
in 1946 and 1958, respectively, neither was screened with any frequency until 
the late 1970s. Spending much of her life in Pasadena, Filmforum hosted her in 
1980, and Filmforum founder Terry Cannon and his wife Mary are responsible for 
the survival of most of Arledge’s surviving artworks. Now, in conjunction with 
an electrifying exhibition at the Armory Center for the Arts, Filmforum is 
delighted to present all of Arledge’s films again. We’re delighted that the 
exhibition curator Irene Tsatsos and Filmforum founder Terry Cannon will be

TRANS FILM: HANKY CODE 
by Gentry McShane and the Periwinkle Cinema Collective. SELECT FILMMAKERS IN 
PERSON! Before Internet dating and hookup apps, The Handkerchief code was 
largely used by gay men in the 1970s to distinguish sexual preferences and 
fetishes in gay clubs and on the streets of places like San Francisco and New 
York. In HANKY CODE, San Francisco's queer experimental film collective 
Periwinkle Cinema brings together queer and trans filmmakers across a spectrum 
of genres, styles, genders, and locations to dissect the code in this epic 
anthology feature comprised of 25 short films. Each filmmaker or filmmaking 
team tells a story of a different color/fetish of the code. Films range from 
narrative to experimental to erotic and animated, with many films redefining 
the traditional code with colors, patterns, and fetishes according to the 
creative interpretation of the artist. Audience members are invited to flag
