The sharpening is really just a high-peak filter (just like video sharpening controls, except in both horizontal and vertical directions). A little goes a long way and it's more apt to make things worse than better.
It _cannot_ add details that have been lost, it can only make the existing details more obvious (and make the noise more obvious too). What materials do you have to begin with?
