Hi Clive,
I don't have a direct answer for you, but I also didn't want to see your
message go completely unanswered. I suspect that not many FlightGear users
own a Matrox triple head to go box. I hope this changes because it's a
great way to add additional views, and additional views are a ***HUGE***
enhancement to the overall simulation experience. For those that have only
ever flown a simulator with a single display, you will be blown away by how
much cooler it is to fly with even 2, but especially 3 displays arranged
side by side. (Or more if you can afford it!) :-)
For those that haven't seen the Matrox triple head 2 go, it is a standalone
box that plugs into your video card output and looks like a triple wide
monitor to your computer. Then you plug 3 displays into the other side of
this box and it does the all the work of dividing up the computer's output
into the video signal for the 3d individual displays. It's a great way to
add 2 more displays to your simulator (or your desktop PC) without needing
to buy additional computers, and it works well with a large variety of game
software.
I have only tested the Matrox triple head 2 go box under linux though, so I
can't speak to any of the custom matrox setup tools.
Under linux, I simply plugged the hardware together, adjusted my xorg.conf
file to "help" the window system figure out my virtual display resolution
(3840 x 1024 for instance), and then created a custom config file to define
individual camera views for each 1/3 of the screen. This allows me to
account for the frame around the LCD displays so that straight lines pick up
on the next screen in the right place relative to where they leave the
previous screen (so they look straight and continuous visually and don't
create a stair-step effect.)
I should also point out that the latest version of FlightGear has good
support for configuring multiple displays on multiple video cards. Matt @
AMD/ATI did a demo for the past SigGraph that showed a machine running 4
video cards with 2 displays connected to each video card for a total of 8
(*EIGHT*) displays from a single PC.
The nice thing about using a single PC versus linking several PC's across a
network is that you automatically get perfect sync between AI and
Multiplayer traffic, random cloud arrangements match across displays,
rotational animations match across displays, etc. There are a number of
animation effects that are computed locally on the individual PC's (rotating
beacon lights at airports, etc.) so there are some advantanges to driving
all your displays from a single computer.
Best regards,
Curt.
