Hi,
I am using Kubuntu (6.0.6 AMD64) and the Nvidia binary installation.
Never used the ubuntu package system for this. I download the driver
installer from Nvidia just as I've done for years with other
distributions. It's a royal pain because Ubuntu doesn't see fit to
include a non-graphical runlevel 3 as on any Redhat derived system. Even
though the Nvidia installer complains about being run in runlevel 1 it
has worked so far. I just upgraded the driver to the latest 9755 version
to check myself. Having the previous Nvidia driver installed made this
difficult because the Nvidia installer won't run if the nvidia kernel
module is loaded, and for some reason I can't unload the nvidia module
from the running kernel once it's installed--too many other modules are
linked to it. It doesn't matter if you stop the X display manager kill X
and so forth. So, I had to run the nvidia-installer with the --uninstall
option in runlevel 1, then reboot to runlevel 1 (so the old kernel
module wouldn't be loaded), and run the new 9755 installer. You would
have to have the kernel-headers package or kernel-source package for
your kernel version installed for this to work since the nvidia
installer compiles part of the driver on your system--the loader part or
something. It seems OK across reboots into normal runlevel 2, so I can't
comment on the issue other people report about having to reinstall the
nvidia packages with every boot. (Not sure 9755 is the best version for
stability though--there seems to be a bad interaction between it and
some linux smp systems(?))

A good bet for more information on howto install nvidia support would be
to search 1) (k)ubuntu forums for this topic as well as at 2) nvidia
forum support at http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/index.php, look for the
linux forum.
good luck,
~h.
