I downloaded fink-0.31.5.tar.gz for installation on my new Mac Book Pro
running OS X 10.6.8 (Xcode 3.2.6) and followed the instructions on
http://www.finkproject.org/download/srcdist.php

Near the beginning of the bootstrap script, I get:

Checking package... looks good (fink-0.31.5).
Checking system... i386-apple-darwin10.8.0
Under Mac OS X 10.6.8, Fink must be bootstrapped or updated with gcc 4.2,
however, you currently have gcc (unknown version) selected. To correct
this problem, run the command:

    sudo gcc_select 4.2

You may need to install a more recent version of the Developer Tools
(Apple's XCode) to be able to do so.

Doing "gcc -v" shows that I have version 4.2.1. I DON'T have gcc_select,
but browsing the mailing list archives & web, I gather that this isn't
unexpected. Do I need to somehow con bootstrap into thinking that 4.2.1 is
4.2?

Alternatively, do I really need to upgrade Xcode? It looks like Xcode 4
requires OS 10.7. Allegedly Xcode 3 is freely available (> 3.2.6?), but I
can't find it without paying $99 to join the Apple Developer Program.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers,
Daren
