I know there's been alot of pushback on the use of the native time
fields, but have you actually read softwork's writeup on why he feels
it's necessary?

It's easy to dismiss him or say, "this guy obviously doesn't know what
the hell he's doing", but I think he's got a fair question, and I'm
not confident anyone has proposed anything that actually accommodates
the use case he has raised.  I've seen lots of, "You MUST use the
native time fields", but nobody saying, "Oh given what you're trying
to accomplish here's a better approach..."
