Define "must". I use the driver from rpmfusion, not because I "must", but because I choose to. I have dual monitors at work, driven by an NVidia NVS 290. It does work on F12 with nouveau as I tried it. But I lose 3D acceleration which I "like" (not need) because I find that some of the Compiz effects actually speed my workflow. (things like window previews are reasonably useful when you have tens of terminals or browser windows open) I would say that I need to use the proprietary driver, because it improves my work - but there is no technical necessity. > If you are using the proprietary nvidia driver or some other non kms > equipped driver, how are you finding F12 ?
